Moving Forward Day Program

The Moving Forward Day program is a companion program to Oakville Children's Homes. Moving Forward was created to fill the need for day time care for individuals with special needs who are over twenty-one years of age and no longer eligible for public education. One of the most critical turning points in the lives of all young people is the transition from high school to post secondary education, employment and life as an adult.

For young adults with disabilities and special needs, often there are many additional questions and challenges. The transition is more complex and requires careful planning and coordination. When young people with disabilities and special needs leave high school, their entitlement to special education and related services usually comes to an end. They and their families leave behind an organized service provider system and the family now assumes the sole responsibility for arranging and coordinating educational training and special services in preparation for possible employment and independent living.

How can the Moving Forward Day Program help?
By providing parents the opportunity to enroll their child in a structured day program, Moving Forward eases the transition challenges each child faces after high school. The program emphasis is on community integration, maintaining physical fitness, and enhancing life skills. Moving Forward offers parents the additional support needed as the young person makes the transition to adult life.

The program provides special needs services and programming from Monday to Friday between 9 am to 4 pm.

There are three programs: (a) Academic year program (September to June); (b) Summer program (July and August); and (c) March Break Camp.
