Staff Model Home Program

Oakville Children’s Home provides Staff Model Home services for children and youth who require a higher level of supervision, structure and individualized support within a community-based residential setting.

The program provides 24-hour staffing, including awake overnight coverage, together with coordinated medical, clinical, behavioural and developmental supports in a stable and structured home environment.

The Staff Model Home program serves children and youth from birth to 18 years of age who can be safely supported in a community-based residential setting and who require enhanced supervision and support.

 The program may be appropriate for children and youth with complex medical needs; significant behavioural or emotional needs; developmental disabilities; histories of trauma, abuse or significant life disruption; or needs requiring structured programming and enhanced supervision. 

Each child receives individualized care planning based on their identified needs, strengths and circumstances. OCH works collaboratively with the child, placing agency and relevant professionals to coordinate services and ensure that supports remain responsive as the child’s needs change.

OCH coordinates case conferences, appointments, referrals and follow-up services and works with the child's professional and support network to promote continuity of care.

OCH coordinates medical, dental and vision care and transportation to appointments as required. Medication is administered by trained staff in accordance with prescribed directions and OCH medication procedures.

Two full-time Registered Nurses provide guidance to residential staff, support the monitoring of complex medical needs, and assist in coordinating care with physicians, hospitals and medical specialists.

Where required, OCH coordinates additional services including counselling and mental health supports, speech and language services, occupational therapy, behavioural supports and other specialized interventions.

OCH recognizes that many children entering residential care have experienced trauma, abuse or significant disruption. Staff are trained in trauma-informed approaches, Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) and behavioural support strategies.

Daily care and programming emphasize consistency, structure, emotional regulation, skill development and positive relationships. Behavioural and therapeutic interventions are implemented in accordance with the child's individualized plans and applicable legislative requirements.

 OCH supports children in maintaining participation in education, recreation and community activities appropriate to their individual needs and abilities. Residential staff assist children with daily routines, life skills, appointments, transportation and participation in activities that promote development, independence and community inclusion.
